If you have just bought your first bag of kava – or you are standing in the kitchen with a strainer bag and a scoop, wondering what on earth “one serve” means – this is the only guide you need. Below we break down exactly how much kava powder per serve, how that changes as your body gets used to it, and how far a 500g or 1kg pack of AAA-grade kava really stretches.

The short version: most people start with 10 to 20 grams of powder per 250ml of water, then adjust up or down over their first few sessions. Everything after that is simple maths.

The short answer: kava serving sizes at a glance

Experience level Kava powder per serve Water Typical sessions per 500g pack
Beginner 10g (1 heaped tablespoon) 250ml About 50
Regular 15g (1.5 tablespoons) 250ml About 33
Experienced 20-25g 250ml 20-25
Heavy / session drinker 30g+ 300ml About 16

Those numbers assume you are using a full-strength, traditional grind kava. If you are drinking a weak or diluted product, you will simply need more of it – and that is exactly the trap we will get to later.

How much kava powder per serve for a beginner

Start at 10 grams. That is one heaped tablespoon, or a level scoop of our strainer-bag scoop if you are measuring by eye. Mix it into 250ml of cold water.

Why so low? Because kava is famous for what the kava community calls reverse tolerance. When you first start, your body has not yet learned to respond, and plenty of first-timers report feeling very little from their first bowl. The temptation is to double or triple the dose straight away. Do not do that – instead, drink the same 10g serve two or three evenings in a row and let it build.

Signs you have found the right starting point:

  • A gentle relaxation that settles into your shoulders and jaw
  • A mild tingling or numbness on the tongue and lips – this is completely normal
  • Feeling more talkative, easy-going and social
  • A clear head. Kava is not alcohol; you should not feel foggy or out of control

If you feel nothing at all after your third or fourth session at 10g, step up to 15g. If the effects feel too strong or your stomach feels unsettled, drop back to 8g or use more water.

Doses for regular and experienced drinkers

Once kava is part of your routine, most people settle somewhere between 15 and 25 grams per serve. A common pattern is two to three serves in an evening – mix one, drink it slowly over 15 to 20 minutes, see how you feel, then decide whether you want another.

Experienced drinkers chasing a deeper effect often push to 30 grams per serve, or shorten the gap between serves. Two things matter here: quality and hydration. A high-strength AAA-grade powder will get you there on less powder than a weak product, so a bigger scoop of budget kava is not the same thing as a proper dose – it just means more gritty liquid to get through.

How to mix it: the 5-minute method

  1. Add your measured kava powder to a bowl or large jug.
  2. Pour in 250ml of cold water (or coconut water for a smoother taste).
  3. Place the powder inside your kava strainer bag and knead it in the water for 5 to 10 minutes.
  4. Squeeze the bag firmly at the end to get the last of the good stuff out.
  5. Pour and drink in small sips, ideally in a calm setting with music on and nowhere to be.

You can also do a second wash with the same bag and another 150ml of water. The second wash is lighter, which makes it a nice top-up serve.

How far does a 500g pack actually stretch?

This is where the maths gets genuinely satisfying.

  • A 500g pack at 15g per serve gives you about 33 serves – around a month of drinking three nights a week.
  • A 1kg pack at 15g per serve gives you about 66 serves – roughly double the value per gram, and the reason most of our regulars buy the 1kg value pack.
  • A 2kg pack at 15g per serve gives you about 133 serves – ideal if kava is a genuine fixture in your household or you run a kava bar or wholesale supply.

If you drink at 10g per serve as a beginner, that same 500g bag stretches to around 50 sessions. At 25g per serve as an experienced drinker, expect around 20.

Here is the bit most people miss: the cheapest kava per bag is rarely the cheapest kava per serve. If a weak product needs 30g to get you where 15g of full-strength kava gets you, you are paying double per session – and drinking twice as much liquid to do it. That is why we sell full-strength AAA-grade kava at the lowest price per gram we can manage, and why every bag is triple lab-tested and 100% pure.

Three dosing mistakes that ruin the experience

Drinking it too fast. Kava comes on gently over 10 to 30 minutes. Slam it and you will overshoot before you know it. Slow sips, always.

Skipping the strainer bag. Traditionally prepared kava must be strained through a proper kava bag. Ours are engineered to exactly 75 microns – the sweet spot that keeps the coarse root fibre out while letting all the potency through. No bag means gritty, unpleasant drinks and a rough stomach.

Ignoring what is in your stomach. Kava is best on a light stomach, but an empty one can feel harsh. A small snack 30 to 60 minutes beforehand usually makes for a smoother session.

Frequently asked questions

How many tablespoons is 10g of kava? Roughly one heaped tablespoon. Always weigh your first few serves if you have kitchen scales – eyeballing gets generous fast.

Can I dose kava by weight rather than volume? Yes, and you should. Gram measurements are the only way to know what you are actually drinking, especially when comparing one pack size against another.

What does kava feel like at a normal serve? Relaxed, warm, sociable and clear-headed, with a slight numbness in the mouth. Most people feel the full effect within 30 minutes, easing off over one to three hours.

Should I dose more if I feel nothing the first time? No – repeat the same dose a few times first. Reverse tolerance is real, and patience beats a bigger scoop every time.

Ready to get the dose right, first time?

Grab a value pack and you get full-strength AAA-grade kava plus the custom-engineered strainer bag you need to brew it properly – dispatched fast, every single day. Buy kava the way our regulars do: 1kg for the best value per gram, or start with 500g and see exactly how far it stretches.
